Timeline: End of chapter 188
Meister ability: Soul Determination which allows him to withstand an otherwise fatal blow in combat and keep fighting.
Soul: A nearly opaque blue-black orb with a topknot of "hair" like his ponytail and a perpetually frowning face. Inside, there's a shadow of what looks like a lotus blossom, but it's so veiled it's almost impossible to see at all.

Often seen as D. Gray-man's archetypal angry young (swords)man with a veiled past, Kanda is an antisocial and often unpleasant Japanese boy who happened to have the fortune of being born beautiful.

He is quick and capable in battle, which he seems to recognize as his forte. (Though that might be a self-fulfilling prophecy because it also seems that his prowess in battle is one of the few things he prides himself on.) His Innocence resides in his katana, Mugen, and he demonstrates on several occasions that he would rather fight than talk or sit by idly thinking, and he would rather fight on his own than be forced to concern himself with the wellbeing of others. This doesn't mean that he's dim witted or unintelligent; however it does mean that he's not terribly dynamic. It would be fair to say, in fact, that he is single-minded to a fault.

Kanda seems to routinely mistake flexibility for weakness and rigidity for strength, which leads him to be static and unyielding. If he has a job to do, he will not deviate from its course. If he resolves to accomplish something he will not be dissuaded. If he makes a judgment he will not alter it. Arguably, this goes a long way to explaining his constant antagonism with Allen Walker: their first encounter took place when Allen was mistakenly identified as an Akuma by the Black Order's Gate Keeper, and though Kanda was ordered to stand down—indeed, did stand down, and has subsequently fought at Allen's side—he seems perennially unable to reconcile himself with having had to reverse his initial position so dramatically.

By a similar token, his dogged personal work ethic (or, more accurately, somewhat peculiar code of honor) seems to drive Kanda's conviction that he cannot allow himself to die until he finds "that person"—an unknown individual whom it seems might be somehow connected to the "Om" symbol tattooed above his heart. Though the mechanism is unclear, the tattoo apparently mirrors the wilting and death of a lotus flower kept under glass in Kanda's room at the Black Order Headquarters, a flower which itself reflects the resilience and longevity of his life force. The flower, it is implied, has something to do with Kanda's amplified healing and his ability to withstand otherwise deadly attacks like the impact of the Akumas' bullets.

In a counterpoint to this ability Kanda can, by invocating Mugen's power (the sword's "Third Illusion"), sublimate his life force, draining it to strengthen his attacks, a tradeoff which he shows himself willing to make in his battle with the Noah Skin Bolic.

This battle, which takes place on the Ark during its disintegration, ultimately results in Skin's death, but at great cost to Kanda: Mugen is shattered, his life force is deeply drained, and he doesn't escape the room before its collapse around his ears.
